Escazú

Escazú for a layover or first night near SJO

Sleep in Escazú, 20 to 30 minutes west of San José airport, for a layover or your first and last nights in Costa Rica: how to get there late, what a free day buys, and when to leave for the flight.

Sunset over the Escazú hills and the valley from the window at Alta Pietra

Sleep in Escazú when your flight lands late or leaves early. It is the hillside suburb west of San José on the airport side, 17 to 19 km and 20 to 30 minutes from SJO per Nest Stays, with restaurants, supermarkets and a private hospital within minutes and none of downtown’s traffic between you and the terminal. Our apartment there, Alta Pietra, adds a pool, a hot tub and a valley view to the buffer night. This guide covers both ends of a trip.

Why Escazú and not an airport hotel?

Because the buffer night is often unavoidable, and Escazú turns it into a day rather than a wait. Two Weeks in Costa Rica says that depending on flight times you may have a night near the airport at either or both ends of your trip, and kimkim notes that international schedules often force at least 24 hours in San José. Costa Rica Vibes advises against downtown for those nights because of the traffic to SJO and describes Escazú as the high-end neighborhood option. Costa Rica Travel Life calls it the city’s most upscale suburban district, safe and quiet, where many of San José’s expats live, a 10 to 25 minute Uber from downtown. An airport hotel gives you a bed by the runway. Escazú gives you a swim, a dinner on foot and the same 20 to 30 minutes to check-in.

How do you get from SJO to Escazú at night?

Three ways, all short. The official orange airport taxis wait in a line outside arrivals, and the taxi officials stand right before the exit doors; agree the fare or watch the meter start. Uber is cheaper, 6,000 to 10,000 colones to Escazú per Route Pura Vida in May 2026, but drivers cannot pick up at the terminal, so you walk to the bus stop on the main road past the parking garage. Or collect your rental car: the route is the General Cañas highway (Route 1) to the Próspero Fernández (Route 27) and the San Rafael de Escazú exit, 20 to 30 minutes outside the 7 to 9 and 17 to 19 rush hours. The building’s security staff hand over Alta Pietra’s keys. Send us your flight number on WhatsApp and we confirm the late arrival and send the instructions before you land.

What do you do with a layover day?

Choose one thing, then the pool. Downtown, the Museo del Oro Precolombino is open 9:15 to 17:00 daily, 8,400 colones for foreign adults with the Numismatic Museum included, and the Museo del Jade is open 8:00 to 17:00 for $16; both are a 10 to 25 minute Uber away. Out of town, Poás Volcano is about 50 km and 1.5 hours from San José per Mytanfeet, open 8:00 to 16:00 with last entry at 14:00, tickets only through SINAC’s online system at $16.95 for non-residents and no sales at the gate. La Paz Waterfall Gardens is 45 minutes from the airport, open 8:00 to 17:00, $56 plus tax for adults on prices valid through 15 December 2026. Closer still, Multiplaza has more than 350 stores 8 minutes from the apartment, and the Monarca restaurant at Butterfly Kingdom is a 1-minute walk. On a real layover with a car, Poás in the morning and the pool at 15:00 is the day.

When should you leave for the airport?

Three hours before an international departure, which is what most airlines suggest per Two Weeks in Costa Rica; Costa Rica Vibes thinks two is enough if you have nothing to sort out. Add the 20 to 30 minute drive, more in the weekday morning rush, and the fuel stop if you are returning a car. The $29 departure tax is included in most tickets, so there is no separate line to pay it. For a 7:00 flight that means leaving Escazú around 3:30; for a noon flight, a slow breakfast and out by 8:30.

Escazú or Santa Ana?

Escazú for a short stay, Santa Ana for a long one. Experience Costa Rica’s February 2026 comparison calls Escazú more polished, commercial and concentrated and Santa Ana more residential, spread out and relaxed. Its conclusion: for a short visit focused on dining, shopping or medical care Escazú generally wins, while remote workers on a longer stay may prefer Santa Ana. LX Costa Rica puts Santa Ana a 5 to 10 minute drive farther west, with both on Route 27 and both 20 to 30 minutes from the airport. For one or two nights, the choice is Escazú.

Is Escazú safe at night?

Yes, with normal habits. Nest Stays calls Escazú consistently rated one of the safest areas in Costa Rica, home to diplomats, expat professionals and international school families; Costa Rica Travel Life says safe and quiet. The US State Department rates the country Level 2 (April 2026), says petty crime is common, and advises not to resist a robbery. So take an Uber rather than walking unlit streets late, and leave nothing visible in the car. Alta Pietra is in a secure building with gated parking, an elevator and security staff at the entrance.

Where to stay

Alta Pietra is our apartment, an oversized one-bedroom in Bello Horizonte, Escazú, for up to four: a king bed and a sofa bed, one full bathroom with a tub and a half bath, central air conditioning, floor-to-ceiling windows with city and mountain views, a full kitchen with a dishwasher, a washer and dryer, a work desk, free gated parking, and a pool and hot tub downstairs. It starts at $150 a night with a two-night minimum. If your trip continues to the beach, Punta Leona is about 90 km down Route 27 per the resort’s FAQ; if it continues to the cloud forest, How to get from San José to Monteverde covers the road.

Questions this guide answers

Is Uber legal at San José airport?

Uber operates in a legal gray area in Costa Rica and is used every day by locals and visitors, per Drink Tea and Travel (May 2026). Uber's own SJO page says pickups are available, but drivers cannot collect you at the arrivals curb; the app sends you to the public bus stop on the main road past the parking garage. Route Pura Vida quotes 6,000 to 10,000 colones from SJO to Escazú. Official orange taxis wait in a line outside arrivals if you would rather not walk.

Can we pick up a rental car at the airport and keep it overnight in Escazú?

Yes, and it is the simplest pattern if you are driving on the next day. Alta Pietra has free gated parking inside a secure building, and the roads to Bello Horizonte are paved; no 4x4 needed. Allow for the rental counter, which can take a while on a busy evening, and for the 20 to 30 minute drive. If you land after dark, Two Weeks in Costa Rica's advice is not to drive long distances that night. Escazú is short.

Where do we shop for the first night?

AutoMercado, the upscale supermarket, is 5 minutes from the apartment by car, with a second branch inside Multiplaza open 10:00 to 21:00 Monday to Saturday and until 20:00 on Sunday. On foot, a pharmacy and convenience store are 3 minutes away and a Fresh Market 10 minutes; Fresh Market's Escazú branches open 6:00 to 22:30 every day. The apartment has a full kitchen, a dishwasher and a coffee maker.

What time does it get dark, and does it matter?

About 18:00 all year, per Two Weeks in Costa Rica, and yes, it matters for the drive after Escazú. Their advice to first-time visitors is not to drive long distances after dark, which is why a flight landing mid-afternoon or later should end in Escazú rather than on the road to Monteverde or the coast. Sleep, eat, swim, and leave after breakfast with the whole day of light ahead.
