Where to stay in Cahuita

Why stay near Cahuita?

Cahuita is the quiet end of Costa Rica’s southern Caribbean: a small town where the national park starts at the last street, 4 to 5 hours from San José, with Puerto Viejo’s restaurants 17 km south when you want them. You come for the coastal trail with sloths and howler monkeys overhead, the reef, the Afro-Caribbean cooking and a pace that Two Weeks in Costa Rica sums up as laid-back. Our two container villas sit a short drive outside town under rainforest canopy, with a plunge pool and air conditioning.

Couples who want early nights and good design do well here, and so do small groups who can take both units. If you want a bar scene and a bike lane to the beach, base yourself in Puerto Viejo, and read Cahuita vs Puerto Viejo before you decide.

How do you get to Cahuita from San José?

By car, take Route 32 through Braulio Carrillo National Park to Limón and then Route 36 south. Costa Rica Vibes puts it at 4 to 5 hours (September 2026); Costa Rica dot com says 3.5 to 4.5 hours for about 120 miles. Route 32 closes when the mountain gets heavy rain: on 13 September 2026 it shut for more than seven hours after a landslide at km 31, and the detour is Route 10 through Turrialba. You do not need a 4x4; the last 3 minutes to our villas are flat gravel.

Without a car, Interbus ($61 to $65 plus tax, 7:30 and 13:30) and Caribe Shuttle ($60 plus tax, 5:30 and 14:00) run shared vans from San José in 4 to 5 hours, per Puerto Viejo Satellite. The MEPE bus leaves San José at 6:00, 8:00, 10:00, 12:00, 14:00, 16:00 and 18:00, takes about 4 hours and cost 5,995 colones in January 2026. Sansa flies San José to Limón in about 45 minutes, several times a week, and Cahuita is about 43 km south of Limón.

How many nights do you need?

Two nights is the floor and three is comfortable. The drive in eats most of a day each way, and Ewa Box 1 and Ewa Box 2 carry a two-night minimum. With three nights you get a full morning on the park trail, an afternoon at the pool, a day for Puerto Viejo and Punta Uva, and one slow evening under the trees.

What is there to do?

Cahuita National Park from Kelly Creek. Walk in from the south end of town. Both entrances open 8:00 to 16:00 per SINAC; the Playa Blanca (Kelly Creek) gate is by voluntary donation and Puerto Vargas charges $5.65 for non-resident adults. The coastal trail runs 8.3 km one way to Puerto Vargas, with the point at about 3.5 km. SINAC lists howler and white-faced monkeys, sloths, toucans, coatis and basilisks along it, and recommends a local guide for spotting them. Snorkeling over the reef is allowed only with a guide.

Playa Blanca inside the park. White sand and calm water a few minutes past the gate. You cannot swim in the sections marked with green flags, so watch the signs.

Playa Negra. The dark-sand beach north of town with fewer people. Rough Guides calls it safe for swimming in most places; go by day.

Sloth Sanctuary of Costa Rica. 15 minutes from Cahuita on Route 36, founded 1992. The Buttercup tour runs hourly from 8:00 to 15:00, $30 per adult and $15 for children 5 to 12, no reservation needed.

Puerto Viejo and its beaches. 17 km south, about 20 minutes. Punta Uva, 8.5 km beyond Puerto Viejo, is the calm reef-protected beach for swimming. Playa Cocles, 3.8 km out, is the surf beach with lifeguards and a strong current, per Mytanfeet.

Jaguar Rescue Center. In Playa Chiquita, about 5 km past Puerto Viejo. Public tours at 9:30 and 11:30, 1.5 hours, $29 per person and free under 10.

When should you go?

September and October, when the Pacific side is at its wettest, are among the driest months on the Caribbean. The IMN describes two rainy periods here, with relative minimums in September to October and February to March and the heaviest rain from November to January and again around July; annual rainfall is around 3,300 mm. Mytanfeet lists February, March, September and October as the drier months. It rains some in every month, warm and brief, so plan around showers rather than against them.

Is Cahuita safe, and where do you eat and get cash?

Cahuita is a small town where petty theft is the risk, not violence. The US State Department rates Costa Rica Level 2 (April 2026), the UK FCDO says muggings and theft are a particular problem on the Atlantic coast, and every local guide repeats the same rule: do not walk unlit roads or beaches after dark, take a taxi. Lock the car and leave nothing visible on the beach. For food, Two Weeks in Costa Rica names Soda Kawe for classic Costa Rican plates and Pizzeria Cahuita; the Caribbean rice-and-beans and rondón places along the main street are the reason to come, and we send our own current list on WhatsApp. Cahuita has one bank, a Banco de Costa Rica branch with a Visa and Plus ATM near the entrance to town; Puerto Viejo adds a Banco Nacional and a BAC ATM open 6:00 to 22:00. Bring some cash from San José for the park donation and the sodas.

Cahuita or Puerto Viejo: which is better for a couple?

Cahuita if you want early nights, the park at your doorstep and a pool; Puerto Viejo, 17 km south, if you want restaurants, bars and a bike-to-beach scene. Two Weeks in Costa Rica calls Cahuita the place to experience the laid-back Caribbean, and Costa Rica Travel Life calls Puerto Viejo one of the country's biggest party towns. Our villas are near Cahuita, and Puerto Viejo is a 20-minute drive when you want dinner out.

Is Cahuita safe?

Yes by day, with the same care you would take anywhere on the Caribbean coast at night. The US State Department rates Costa Rica Level 2 (April 2026), and the UK FCDO says theft is a particular problem on the Atlantic side. Local guides tell you not to walk unlit roads or beaches after dark; take a taxi instead. Our villas are on a private property with a maintenance person usually present.

Do you need a car in Cahuita?

Yes for our location. The villas are a short drive from town and the beaches, about 10 minutes, with the last 3 minutes on flat gravel that any car can handle; you do not need a 4x4. A car also opens Puerto Viejo, Punta Uva and the Sloth Sanctuary. Without one you would rely on taxis, which work but limit you to one outing a day.

How much does Cahuita National Park cost and when is it open?

Both entrances open 8:00 to 16:00 daily per SINAC. The Playa Blanca entrance beside the town of Cahuita (Kelly Creek) charges a voluntary cash donation; the Puerto Vargas entrance charges non-resident adults $5.65 including tax. The coastal trail is 8.3 km one way from Kelly Creek to Puerto Vargas, and snorkeling inside the park is allowed only with a guide.

When is the best time to visit the Caribbean coast?

September and October, and again February and March, when the rest of Costa Rica's pattern flips. The IMN, Costa Rica's weather service, describes two rainy periods on the Caribbean with relative minimums in September to October and February to March, and the heaviest rain from November to January and around July. Mytanfeet lists the drier months as February, March, September and October. Expect showers in any month; annual rainfall is around 3,300 mm.

Are the container villas hot?

No. All three units have air conditioning, large windows and an open design that connects inside and outside, and they sit under rainforest canopy rather than in open sun. You will use the AC at night in the warm months and the deck the rest of the time. Bring insect repellent; you are in the jungle.

Can we rent both villas for a group?

Yes. Book Ewa Boxes and you have the whole property, both container units with the private plunge pool, for up to 8 guests in 2 bedrooms with 2 bathrooms. Ewa Box 1 (no pool) and Ewa Box 2 (with the pool) can also be booked separately for up to 4 each, in which case another party may be in the other unit; the space between the two keeps your privacy.
