Where to stay in Monteverde

Why stay in Monteverde?

Monteverde is the cloud forest: a ridge at about 1,400 m where Pacific and Caribbean air meet, roughly three hours by road from either international airport. You come for the reserves, the hanging bridges and the animals that appear after dark. You sleep in Santa Elena, the town, or on the quieter roads that climb toward the reserve.

Couples on short trips get the most out of it. Most of our guests spend one or two nights and arrive after a morning flight or a long drive, which is why all four of our stays take bags from 11:00 and let you check in early once the clean is done. Families use Casa Yaiwa in town; couples take the lofts and the cabin.

How do you get to Monteverde?

From San José, drive north on Route 1 to the Full gas station turnoff and take Route 606, which is paved all the way to Santa Elena. Two Weeks in Costa Rica puts the 606 stretch at 36 km and about an hour, and the whole trip at about 3 hours. You do not need a 4x4 on this road. Skip Route 605. From Liberia it is also about 3 hours, but Route 145 through Las Juntas has gravel sections, and Mytanfeet recommends a high-clearance car there, with 4WD in the rainy season.

Without a car, Tropical Tours runs a shared shuttle from SJO at 8:15 and 15:00 for $54 per person, about 4.5 hours door to door. The Transmonteverde public bus leaves San José twice a day for 3,885 colones on the company’s current rate page; call +506 2645 7447 to confirm the terminal, which has changed recently. The full comparison is in How to get from San José to Monteverde.

How many nights do you need?

Two nights, which is also the minimum Two Weeks in Costa Rica and kimkim both give. The reserves are best at the 7:30 opening and the wildlife is best after dark, so you want one full evening and one early morning. One night works if you arrive by noon: drop bags, walk the bridges, do a night tour and reach the reserve at opening before you drive out. Monteverde in two nights has both plans.

What is there to do?

Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve. About 6 km and 15 minutes from Santa Elena. Since 8 December 2025 entry is by timed slot on one of three circuits (1.4, 2.8 or 4.1 km) with 26 people per slot; book online at the reserve’s site. Open 7:30 to 16:00, $29 per adult and $16 per child as of September 2026 per Two Weeks in Costa Rica. Kapetsowa is within walking distance of the trailhead road.

Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve. About 20 minutes from town, open 7:00 to 16:00 with last entry at 15:00, 10,000 colones per adult on the 2026 tariff (about $22). Quieter than Monteverde, with the same moss, orchids and quetzal chances.

Hanging bridges. Selvatura Park is 6.7 km from town with eight bridges on a 3 km loop, open 7:00 to 16:00, $49 per adult. Treetopia Park (the former Sky Adventures) has six bridges on hourly tours from 7:00 to 15:00, $49 per adult and $39 for children 5 to 17, about 20 minutes out.

A night tour. The best hour for wildlife. Kinkajou Night Walk leaves at 18:00 and 20:20 for 1.5 hours at $35 per adult; the Monteverde Reserve’s own night walk starts between 18:00 and 18:30. On one walk, Two Weeks in Costa Rica’s guide found a two-toed sloth, a side-striped palm pit viper and a toucan asleep on a branch. We help book it; ask on WhatsApp.

Curi-Cancha Reserve. 15 minutes from Santa Elena beside the cheese factory, open 7:00 to 15:00, $25 per adult; the local pick for birders and quetzals in season.

Coffee, chocolate and sugar cane. Don Juan’s tour is 3 km from town, about 2 hours, $52 per adult with slots at 8:00, 10:00, 13:00 and 15:00 per Costa Rica Travel Life. Aroma de Café sits on a working coffee farm if you would rather walk out the door.

When should you go?

Dry season runs from mid-December to early May and rainy season from mid-May to early December, with September and October the wettest months, per Mytanfeet in May 2026. Days average around 21 °C and nights around 15 °C. December to February is very windy on the ridge, and mist can blow through in any month, so pack a fleece and a rain shell whatever the season. Two Weeks in Costa Rica advises against October.

Where do you eat, and what about cash and SIM cards?

Santa Elena has the restaurants, bakeries and sodas within a few blocks, which is Casa Yaiwa’s advantage. From the other three stays dinner is a drive, 15 to 20 minutes from Calma Loft and Aroma de Café, so shop on the way in. Three banks serve the area (Banco Nacional, Banco de Costa Rica, Banco Popular) and the ATMs are in Santa Elena; most places take cards, but small vendors and tips want cash. Buy a SIM at the Kolbi counter across from baggage claim at SJO (passport required) before you drive up. Signal is thinner in the hills.

Santa Elena or the reserve road: which of our four?

Casa Yaiwa is the town house, a 2-minute walk from the center, three bedrooms for six. Kapetsowa Container Loft is the glass-fronted container on the Monteverde side, sleeping four and within walking distance of the reserve trails. Calma Loft is a smaller container loft for two, 15 minutes out, with a heater and a sunset view. Aroma de Café is the cabin for two on a coffee farm 15 to 20 minutes from town, with a jacuzzi and a deck over the plantations. All four take luggage from 11:00 and offer early check-in when the clean is done; the routine is in Early check-in and luggage storage in Monteverde. Leaving for the coast, Punta Leona is about 3 hours with a private driver per Monteverde Info, and La Fortuna 3 to 4 hours by road.

Guests ask us about Monteverde

How do you get to Monteverde from San José airport?

By car in about 3 hours: Route 27 or Route 1 north to the Full gas station turnoff, then Route 606, which is paved all the way to Santa Elena per Two Weeks in Costa Rica (August 2025). Shared shuttles such as Tropical Tours leave SJO at 8:15 and 15:00 for $54 per person and take about 4.5 hours. Tell us your arrival time and we will help you choose.

Do you need a 4x4 for Monteverde?

No, not from San José. Route 606 is paved to town, and Two Weeks in Costa Rica says a 4x4 is not necessary, though a higher car is more comfortable. From Liberia, Route 145 through Las Juntas mixes gravel and concrete; Mytanfeet recommends high clearance there, with 4WD in the rainy season. All four of our stays are reachable in a normal car; two, Calma Loft and Aroma de Café, sit at the end of short gravel lanes.

How many nights should we stay in Monteverde?

Two nights, and Two Weeks in Costa Rica and kimkim say the same, because the reserves are best at opening and the wildlife is best after dark. With our early check-in and luggage drop, one night still buys you an afternoon walk, a night tour and a morning in the reserve. Three nights lets you add a coffee tour and a second reserve without rushing.

Where can we leave luggage in Monteverde before check-in?

At the house. There are no luggage lockers in Monteverde, so at all four of our stays you can drop bags from about 11:00 while the previous clean finishes, then go walk. Message us on WhatsApp the morning you arrive and we will confirm the time with the local manager. The full routine is in our early check-in guide.

Can we check in before 15:00?

Often, yes. Standard check-in is 15:00 and check-out 11:00, but once the previous guests have left and the clean is done we let you in, sometimes from late morning. We cannot guarantee it, because it depends on the departure before you. Ask on WhatsApp the day before or the morning of arrival and we will tell you what is realistic.

Is Monteverde cold at night?

Cool rather than cold. Nights average around 15 °C (59 °F), with typical lows of 14 to 16 °C per Costa Rica Vibes and strong wind from December to February. Bring a fleece and a rain shell. Kapetsowa and Calma Loft have heaters.

Should we stay in Santa Elena or near the reserve?

Santa Elena if you want to walk to dinner and the bus; the reserve road or the hills if you want quiet and views. Casa Yaiwa is a 2-minute walk from the center of Santa Elena. Kapetsowa is within walking distance of the Monteverde Reserve trails; Calma Loft and Aroma de Café are 15 to 20 minutes out by car; Aroma's coffee farm is minutes from the main tours.

Which night tour should we book and can you help?

Yes, we help book it, and the choice depends on where you sleep. The Monteverde Reserve runs its own night walk starting between 18:00 and 18:30; Kinkajou Night Walk leaves at 18:00 and 20:20 and lasts 1.5 hours for $35 per adult; guides at the Monteverde Wildlife Refuge charge about $44 plus a $15 entrance. Expect sloths, pit vipers and sleeping birds. Tell us your dates and we send options.
