Costa Rica homes for families

Two or more bedrooms, a kitchen and a washer, a pool or a beach within a short walk, and hosts who tell you which beach is calm this week. These are the homes families book with us, and what each one is good at.

What made the list: at least two bedrooms or six guests, a kitchen, and either a pool or a beach nearby.

What parents ask us

Which beach for small children?

Playa Mantas and Playa Blanca inside Punta Leona are the sheltered ones close to San José; Sámara is a bay you can swim in; Cahuita has the beach inside the national park. The destination pages say which months bring bigger surf.

Are the pools fenced?

No. Casa Azul has the pool in the middle of the house between the bedrooms and the kitchen, with no gate; keep floaties on small kids and one adult watching. We say this on every listing because it matters.

Do we need a car?

In Punta Leona, Sámara and Cahuita a car makes the week easier and is not essential inside the resort. In Monteverde a normal car reaches every home; two sit on short gravel lanes.

Can we arrive early with tired kids?

Ask on WhatsApp the day before. In Monteverde you can come in from 11:00 once the clean is done; in Cahuita you can drop the bags while it finishes.

Questions families ask

All questions
Is there Wi-Fi, and is it fast enough for work?

Every home has Wi-Fi. Where Airbnb shows a measured speed it ranges from 118 to 171 Mbps (Punta Leona, Sámara and Escazú), and the Monteverde lofts are described as fast enough for remote work and streaming. Several homes have a dedicated desk; the stay page says which.

Is there hot water?

Yes, in every home. Two details worth knowing: at Kapetsowa and Calma Loft in Monteverde the hot water is in the shower, not the kitchen tap, and at Lapas Paradise the showers are set to a warm rather than hot temperature. Each stay page says so.

Do the homes have air conditioning?

The beach, Caribbean, Escazú and Kirkland homes do. The Monteverde homes do not, because the cloud forest sits high and stays cool; they come with fans for warm afternoons and, at Kapetsowa and Calma Loft, a portable heater for cold nights. Pack a warm layer for Monteverde in any month.

Do the homes have kitchens?

Yes. Most have a full kitchen with stove, oven, refrigerator, microwave and coffee maker. Calma Loft, Aroma de Café and both Ewa Box containers have kitchenettes with a stove or induction cooktop and no oven. Coffee is provided in most homes, and in Monteverde it is local.
