Punta Leona with kids: house, beach, tips

Punta Leona works with kids because pool, beach and supermarket are on foot. Which house to pick, Casa Azul's unfenced pool, the macaws and the drive.

Pool with a pink flamingo float under a striped umbrella at Casa Azul, Punta Leona

Punta Leona works with kids because everything is close: the pool at the house, Playa Mantas on foot, the supermarket 75 meters from Casa Azul and San José an hour away on paved road. Here is which house fits which ages, where to keep watch and what time the macaws come out. Checked September 2026.

Which of our houses works best with kids?

Casa Azul for one family with small children, Natural Leona or Lapas Paradise for a family of up to eight that wants air conditioning and a modern house, and those two together, booked as Lapas Leona Home, for two or three families. Casa Azul is single-story, with the pool in the center and the kitchen, living room, terrace and both bedrooms opening onto it, so you watch the water from the sofa or the stove. The second bedroom has two bunk beds, each with a double below and a single above, and its own air conditioning; there are children’s books and toys, kids’ dinnerware, beach gear, a basketball hoop and a hammock by the pool.

Natural Leona and Lapas Paradise each have five beds in two bedrooms (at Lapas Paradise one is a loft bunk by the window), air conditioning in the bedrooms and a saltwater pool with a rancho that they share with each other when both are booked. Book the two together as Lapas Leona Home and you get two mirrored houses side by side, each with its own kitchen and living room, for up to sixteen in four bedrooms with double beds and bunks; the kids can sleep in one house and the grandparents in the other, and everyone shares the pool and the rancho with its table for eight, with no other guests.

Is the pool safe for small children?

That is on you, because neither of our pools is fenced, and the Casa Azul and Lapas Leona Home listings say so outright. At Casa Azul the pool has no gate or lock, it sits between the bedrooms and the kitchen, and the house rules note that a river and the sea are nearby. With children who cannot swim yet, floaties on from the moment they get up and one adult assigned to watch the water; a guest recommends exactly that. The pool behind Natural Leona and Lapas Paradise has no fence either, but it has a shallow ledge where little ones can stand, and its water is salt, gentler on eyes and skin than chlorine. The two houses in Las Lapas have an outdoor shower and a hose out front for the sand; showering before the pool is in their house rules.

Which beach is best with kids, and how far is it?

Playa Mantas, on foot from all three houses: about 15 minutes from Casa Azul per a guest who timed it, about 10 from Lapas Paradise and walking distance from Natural Leona, with waves Two Weeks in Costa Rica (February 2026) describes as gentle and good for swimming even with young kids. Playa Blanca is 15 minutes farther south past a rocky point you cross at low tide: shoes for wet rock and, with small children, go and come back inside the same low-tide window. Two Weeks in Costa Rica mentions a lifeguard at Playa Blanca (February 2026); for Playa Mantas we found no source that confirms one, so at Mantas count on there being none, do not swim alone with the children and check on the day. Tides, access and parking are in our Punta Leona beaches guide; we send the week’s tide times on WhatsApp before you arrive.

Where do you buy the milk and the ice cream?

Seventy-five meters from Casa Azul: the Arenas supermarket, the Pops ice cream shop and the Hotel Arenas restaurant, open to the public, share the same corner, so the morning bread and the afternoon ice cream are a walk with the kids. From the other two houses there are restaurants, a small convenience store and an ice cream shop within walking distance; for a big shop, a pharmacy or a specific brand of diapers, Jacó is about 15 minutes by car and has the large supermarkets on the main street, per Mytanfeet (June 2025). All three kitchens have a refrigerator, a coffee maker and the basics, Natural Leona adds a BBQ grill with utensils, and at Lapas Paradise the shower water runs warm by design rather than hot; if you want it hotter, say so when you book.

What time do you see the macaws?

In the morning and late in the afternoon, which is when our guests report them: at Casa Azul and at Natural Leona they have seen pairs of scarlet macaws in the trees beside the house without going to look, and in Las Lapas the streets carry their name. They are loud: the kids hear them before they see them, and that is part of the fun. The hours, the resort’s nest program and the bird walk are in our Punta Leona beaches guide, and Carara National Park, with hours and fees, is on the Punta Leona page.

What about the raccoons and the quiet hours?

Raccoons open doors left ajar, so the rule at all three houses is to close the doors every time you go out and before check-out; with kids running in and out of the pool all day, put someone in charge of the door. Quiet hours run from 21:00 to 08:00 at all three, and none of them allows parties or pets. For a family with small children, the quiet hours line up with bedtime. Each house declares in its rules a security camera facing the street or the front. Turn off the air conditioning and fans when you leave, and at Casa Azul keep in mind that the kitchen side gets hot in the afternoon and has fans, not air conditioning: the pool is the three o’clock plan.

What is the drive from San José like with kids?

One hour on paved road by our estimate, and about 90 minutes with traffic per the guides; the resort’s FAQ says 90 km and one and a half hours. No 4x4 needed. You take Route 27, which has tolls (carry colones or a card), and the Costanera; if you stop at the Tárcoles bridge to see the crocodiles, someone stays with the car, because break-ins are reported there. The full route is on our Punta Leona page. Since June 2026 the Punta Leona entrance gate on the main road is gone, removed by court order; the resort’s own entrance rules for people who are not hotel guests can change, so ask us which entrance to use before you drive in. Inside, follow the directions we send rather than the map pin, because the residential streets are not named in every app. Arrive in daylight: it gets dark around 18:00 all year, and check-in at Casa Azul is between 15:00 and 20:00 by lockbox, so leaving San José mid-afternoon gets you there with the kids awake and the pool still in the sun.

Where to stay

All three houses are ours. Casa Azul for up to eight, with bunk beds, toys, a private unfenced pool and the supermarket 75 meters away, from $287 a night. Natural Leona, from $266, and Lapas Paradise, from $292, for eight each, with a saltwater pool shared between the two. Book both together as Lapas Leona Home for up to sixteen, with the saltwater pool and its shallow ledge to yourselves, from $355. Prices rise in high season and the Airbnb page shows the total for your dates. Message us on WhatsApp with the children’s ages and we will tell you which one fits.

Questions this guide answers

Is the pool at Casa Azul fenced?

No. The pool is private but has no gate or lock, and it sits in the middle of the house between the bedrooms and the kitchen. With children who cannot swim yet, floaties on from the moment they get up and one adult watching the water; a guest recommends exactly that. The salt water pool behind Natural Leona and Lapas Paradise, which is yours alone when you book both as Lapas Leona Home, has no fence either.

Can you walk to the beach with small children?

Yes, to Playa Mantas, which has gentle waves per Two Weeks in Costa Rica: about 15 minutes from Casa Azul, about 10 from Lapas Paradise and walking distance from Natural Leona next door. Playa Blanca is 15 minutes farther over a rocky point at low tide, better for children who already walk well, with shoes for wet rock.

Is there a supermarket near the houses?

Yes. The Arenas supermarket, the Pops ice cream shop and the Hotel Arenas restaurant are 75 meters from Casa Azul, and the other two houses have a small convenience store, restaurants and an ice cream shop within walking distance. For a big shop or a pharmacy, Jacó is about 15 minutes by car and has the large supermarkets.

Do you need a 4x4, and how long is the drive from San José?

No 4x4: the road is paved the whole way and the main access into Punta Leona is a cobblestone street in good condition. We put it at one hour from the airport and the guides about 90 minutes with traffic. Ask us which entrance to use (the resort's entrance rules can change) and arrive in daylight, because it gets dark around 18:00.
