Cahuita

Cahuita vs Puerto Viejo: which one for you

Cahuita is the quiet town with the national park at its doorstep; Puerto Viejo, 17 km south, has the restaurants, bars and bike-to-beach culture. How to choose, and how to do both from one base.

Turquoise plunge pool with wooden deck and jungle behind

Cahuita is the quiet town with the national park at the end of its main street; Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, about 17 km south, has the restaurants, the bars and the bike lane to a string of beaches. Couples who want early nights, wildlife and a pool pick Cahuita. People who want a scene, surf and a choice of twenty dinners pick Puerto Viejo. They are 20 minutes apart, so whichever you choose, you can spend a day in the other.

How far apart are they?

About 17 km and 20 minutes by car along Route 36, per Costa Rica Vibes and Two Weeks in Costa Rica. Both are in Talamanca canton on the southern Caribbean coast, 4 to 5 hours from San José. Puerto Viejo’s beaches continue south of the town: Playa Cocles at 3.8 km, Playa Chiquita at 4.5 km, Punta Uva at about 9 km and Manzanillo at 13 km, so “Puerto Viejo” is really a 13 km strip. Cahuita is compact: the town, the park gate and Playa Negra to the north.

Which has better beaches?

Cahuita has the calmest and Puerto Viejo has the most. Inside Cahuita National Park, Playa Blanca is white sand and calm water a few minutes past the Kelly Creek gate, with the coastal trail running 8.3 km one way to Puerto Vargas. Entry at Kelly Creek is by voluntary donation and the park opens 8:00 to 16:00 per SINAC. You cannot swim where green flags mark the currents. Playa Negra, north of Cahuita town, is dark sand with fewer people.

Puerto Viejo’s strip gives you variety in one bike ride. Playa Cocles is the surf beach, one of the only ones in the area with lifeguards, and Mytanfeet says its current is too strong for swimming. Punta Uva, 8.5 km from town, is the calm, reef-protected one that Puerto Viejo Satellite recommends for kids. Manzanillo at the end is the kayaking beach. If your idea of a beach day is a towel and a book, Cahuita’s park wins; if it is a bike, three beaches and a beer, Puerto Viejo.

Which is better for a couple?

It depends on what kind of evening you want. Two Weeks in Costa Rica calls Cahuita the place to experience the laid-back Caribbean, and a local realtor’s guide puts it plainly: this is not a party town, and that is why people choose it. You walk the park in the morning, swim, eat rice and beans, and by 21:00 the street is quiet. Our container villas are a short drive outside town under the canopy with a plunge pool, which suits that day.

Puerto Viejo is the opposite evening. Costa Rica Travel Life calls it one of the country’s biggest party towns, and Mytanfeet lists reggae music, bonfires, shots and dancing at Salsa Brava, Tasty Waves and Johnny’s Place. Restaurants run from Italian to Caribbean to bakeries, and the bike culture means nobody drives to dinner. Couples who want to be out every night should sleep there.

Which is safer?

Neither is dangerous by day, and both need the same rule at night. The US State Department rates Costa Rica Level 2 (April 2026) and says petty crime is common throughout the country; the UK FCDO says muggings and theft are a particular problem on the Atlantic coast; Canada’s advisory names Cahuita, Puerto Limón and Puerto Viejo among Caribbean areas with theft incidents (September 2026). Puerto Viejo Satellite’s local advice is the same for both towns: do not walk alone at night on unlit roads or beaches, and have a business call you a taxi. Rough Guides adds a specific caution about the Playa Negra road in Cahuita after dark. In practice: lock the car, leave nothing on the beach, take taxis at night, and you will have the same trip thousands of couples have every season.

Where do you eat in each?

Cahuita’s cooking is the Afro-Caribbean kitchen: rice and beans in coconut milk, rondón, Caribbean chicken. Two Weeks in Costa Rica names Soda Kawe for classic Costa Rican breakfast and lunch and Pizzeria Cahuita; Rough Guides adds El Girasol for Italian. Some long-running names have closed in the last few years, so ask us for the current list on WhatsApp.

Puerto Viejo has the range. Two Weeks in Costa Rica names La Pecora Nera, Stashu’s Con Fusion, KOKi Beach and Bread and Chocolate; Mytanfeet adds Soda Lidia’s and De Gustibus bakery. Both towns have ATMs. Cahuita has one bank, a Banco de Costa Rica with a Visa and Plus machine near the entrance to town; Puerto Viejo has BCR and Banco Nacional ATMs open 6:00 to 22:00 plus a BAC, per Puerto Viejo Satellite.

Can you do both?

Yes, and from Cahuita it is the easier direction. Base yourself near Cahuita, walk the park on your first morning, and drive or bus the 20 minutes south for a Puerto Viejo afternoon: bikes to Punta Uva, the Jaguar Rescue Center at Playa Chiquita (tours 9:30 and 11:30, $29 per person, free under 10), dinner in town, then back before it is late. From Puerto Viejo the Cahuita day is the park and lunch, which works too, but you return to noise. The Sloth Sanctuary is 15 minutes from Cahuita on the road in and belongs to the Cahuita side of the ledger.

Where to stay

The two containers below are ours, near Cahuita rather than in Puerto Viejo, so read this as our recommendation. Ewa Boxes is the whole property, both container units booked together under the rainforest with a private plunge pool, air conditioning and an EV charger, for up to 8. Ewa Box 1 sleeps 4 without the pool; Ewa Box 2 sleeps 4 with it; both have a two-night minimum. The beaches are about 10 minutes away by car and you do not need a 4x4. The full area guide is at Cahuita, and if the Caribbean’s September and October dry spell is what brought you here, the other coast’s rain is exactly why it is quiet.

Questions this guide answers

Is there a bus between Cahuita and Puerto Viejo?

Yes. MEPE, the Caribbean bus company, runs the local service along Route 36 between the two towns, and the ride is about 25 minutes over roughly 17 km per Rome2rio's aggregated timetable. It is the cheapest way to have dinner in Puerto Viejo without driving back in the dark. The last buses are early, though, so check the time at the Cahuita terminal (phone 2755 1011) before you rely on it.

Do you need a car in Puerto Viejo?

Less than in Cahuita. Mytanfeet says the most popular way to get around Puerto Viejo is by bike, with rentals at $3 to $12 a day, and Two Weeks in Costa Rica describes the road to Manzanillo as a bike superhighway with more bicycles than cars. From our villas near Cahuita you do want a car, because the property is a short drive from town and the beaches. What you get for that drive is privacy and a pool.

Which town is closer to the Sloth Sanctuary?

Cahuita. The Sloth Sanctuary of Costa Rica sits on Route 36 about 15 minutes from Cahuita and 35 minutes from Limón, so it is on the way in from San José. Tours run hourly from 8:00 to 15:00, $30 per adult and $15 for children 5 to 12, with no reservation needed. From Puerto Viejo, add the 20 minutes to Cahuita first.

Which one is better for surfing?

Puerto Viejo. Playa Cocles, 3.8 km from town, is the surf beach, one of the only beaches in the area with lifeguards, with a current Mytanfeet says is too strong for swimming. Cahuita's beaches are inside a national park and are for walking and calm-water swimming; the reef there is for guided snorkeling, not boards.
