Which routes only fly part of the year?

The winter is when the map fills in. Look at the dates in the table: most of the Northeast, Midwest and West Coast nonstops to Liberia, and several to San José, start between late October and December, so a trip in September or early October has fewer choices than one in January. Three routes are explicitly seasonal. The Tico Times (August 2026) calls United’s Dulles to Liberia flight a holiday-season route, 17 December to 4 January, and reports that Southwest’s Nashville nonstop runs only on four Saturdays, 13 February to 6 March 2027. Delta’s JFK to Liberia flight is seasonal too, Saturdays from 19 December to 10 April 2027, per The Tico Times in June 2026. Phoenix has no nonstop at all: FlightsFrom shows the last American flight to San José scheduled in August 2021.

What if your city has no nonstop?

You connect through one of the cities in the table, on whichever airline flies from your home airport: American through Miami or Dallas, United through Houston or Newark, Delta through Atlanta, JetBlue through Fort Lauderdale, Southwest through Houston Hobby or Orlando. Those show no start date on FlightsFrom’s schedules, so they should run all year; more hubs join in winter. Your total is both flights plus the layover, so from the Pacific Northwest or the Mountain West a one-stop trip usually takes the whole day. If you plan to drive after landing, choose the connection that gets you in by early afternoon; the section below explains why.

San José or Liberia?

Fly into San José for our homes in Escazú, Punta Leona, Monteverde and Cahuita, and into Liberia for Sámara, about 110 km and 2 to 2.5 hours from LIR per Costa Rica Vibes. Monteverde is the one that works from both: Two Weeks in Costa Rica puts it about three hours from each airport. Fares, schedules and the drive at the other end can flip the answer, which is what our guide to choosing between San José and Liberia is for.

What time will it be when you land?

Costa Rica is on UTC-6 all year and never changes its clocks, per timeanddate.com. The US does, so the gap moves. From 1 November 2026, when US clocks fall back, until they spring forward in March, Costa Rica has the same time as Chicago, is 1 hour behind New York, 1 hour ahead of Denver and 2 hours ahead of Los Angeles. During US daylight saving time it matches Denver, is 1 hour behind Chicago, 2 behind New York and 1 ahead of Los Angeles. Schedules show local time at each end, so a 10:00 departure from Miami lands around noon Costa Rica time in January and around 11:00 in July.

Landing late: where to sleep and when to drive

It gets dark around 6 p.m. all year, and Two Weeks in Costa Rica tells first-time visitors not to drive long distances after dark: faded lines, little lighting, more rain at night and people on the shoulder. Work back from sunset:

  • Punta Leona is about 90 km and around 1.5 hours from SJO, per Hotel Punta Leona’s FAQ; without traffic we make it closer to an hour. A morning or early afternoon landing gets you there in daylight.
  • Monteverde is about 3 hours. If you land after 14:00, sleep near the airport and drive up in the morning; How to get from San José to Monteverde covers the road.
  • Cahuita is 4 to 5 hours by Route 32, per Costa Rica Vibes, so it only works the same day on a morning arrival.
  • Escazú is 17 to 19 km and 20 to 30 minutes from SJO outside the weekday rush hours, per Nest Stays.

That last one is where the late flights end. Our apartment there, Alta Pietra, has a king bed, gated parking and building security who hand over the keys, and it works as a first night or a last one before an early departure. If you land at night, tell us your arrival time in advance and we will explain the parking arrangement. Our Escazú guide covers getting there from the terminal and what to do with a spare day. Send us your flight number on WhatsApp and we will tell you whether to drive on the same day or sleep first.

Monteverde works from either: Two Weeks in Costa Rica says it is about three hours from each airport. Both airports take nonstops from most large US hubs, and flight times from the same city are usually within about 15 minutes of each other (see the table).
