Fly into San José (SJO) if you are staying in Escazú, Punta Leona or Cahuita, and usually for Monteverde too. Fly into Liberia (LIR), the one people search for as the Guanacaste airport, if you are staying in Sámara. Monteverde is the only one of our destinations where both work: it is about three hours from either airport, but the road from San José is paved all the way and the road from Liberia is not. Below are the drive times from each airport to each place we host, with a source for every number, and what changes between the two terminals.
How far is each destination from each airport?
| Destination | From SJO | From LIR | Our pick |
|---|---|---|---|
| Escazú | 20 to 30 min, 17 to 19 km (Nest Stays) | About 3.5 h, 211 km (Rome2rio) | SJO |
| Punta Leona | About 1.5 h, 90 km (Hotel Punta Leona) | About 3 h, 182 km (Rome2rio); 3.5 to 4.5 h by private transfer (Costa Rica Shuttles) | SJO |
| Cahuita | 4 to 5 h (Costa Rica Vibes); 3.5 to 4.5 h (Costa Rica dot com) | About 6.5 h, 399 km (Rome2rio); 7.5 to 9.5 h by private transfer (Costa Rica Shuttles) | SJO |
| Monteverde | About 3 h on paved Route 606 (Two Weeks in Costa Rica) | About 3 h (Two Weeks in Costa Rica); 2 to 3 h, 122 km (Pura Vida Traveling), partly gravel | SJO, or LIR with a Guanacaste leg |
| Sámara | About 4 to 4.5 h (Mytanfeet; Two Weeks in Costa Rica) | 2 to 2.5 h, 110 km, paved (Costa Rica Vibes) | LIR |
Rome2rio’s times are pure driving with no stops, so treat them as the floor, and add the immigration line and the rental car pickup. Costa Rica Vibes’ September 2026 guide says the San José to Liberia drive is usually more like 4 to 6 hours in practice and calls Google Maps’ 3 to 4 hours optimistic, which is worth remembering for any route that crosses the Central Valley.
Why San José for four of our five destinations?
Because SJO is in the Central Valley, where the roads to the Caribbean, the central Pacific and the western suburbs begin. Alta Pietra in Escazú is 20 to 30 minutes from the terminal outside the weekday rush hours of 7 to 9 and 17 to 19, per Nest Stays. Punta Leona is Route 27 west and the Costanera south, paved the whole way, and close enough that you can land in the early afternoon and swim before dark. Cahuita is the long one from either airport: 4 to 5 hours from San José over Route 32 through Braulio Carrillo, against about 6.5 hours of pure driving from Liberia on Rome2rio’s figures. For the Caribbean, Liberia only makes sense if you are already in Guanacaste.
Monteverde: the one that can go either way
Two Weeks in Costa Rica puts both international airports about three hours from Monteverde, so the difference is the road. From SJO you take Route 1 north to the Full gas station and then Route 606, 36 km and about an hour up to Santa Elena, paved all the way per the same guide (August 2025). From LIR the usual road is Route 145 through Las Juntas, which mixes gravel and concrete; Mytanfeet recommends a high-clearance car there and 4WD in the rainy season. Our advice: fly into SJO if Monteverde is the first stop, and consider LIR if Sámara is also on the trip. How to get from San José to Monteverde covers the drive in detail.
Sámara: Liberia, clearly
From LIR you drive Route 21 south to Nicoya and Route 150 to the coast, about 110 km and 2 to 2.5 hours on paved road per Costa Rica Vibes (September 2026). From San José it is about 4 hours per Mytanfeet and 4.5 per Two Weeks in Costa Rica, west on Route 27 and across the Tempisque bridge. If you would rather not drive, Tropical Tours runs a shared shuttle from Liberia airport at 9:00 and 15:00 for $50 per person.
How are the two airports different?
Size. SJO is the biggest and busiest airport in Costa Rica, in Alajuela about 20 km northwest of downtown San José, and handled about 6.5 million passengers in 2024, per Wikipedia’s traffic table. Liberia, officially Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport, is about 11 km west-southwest of Liberia and handled about 1.9 million that year. Costa Rica Vibes calls it the second-largest in the country.
Routes from the US and Canada. SJO’s own connectivity page lists nonstops from Houston, Newark, San Francisco, Denver, Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami, Dallas, Charlotte, Atlanta, Fort Lauderdale, New York and Orlando, among others. Liberia’s airport lists 16 US cities and six Canadian ones: Montreal, Toronto, Calgary, Ottawa, Vancouver and Winnipeg. Some Canadian routes to Liberia are winter only; FlightConnections puts Vancouver’s season at November to April.
Routes from Europe. Every European nonstop lands at SJO: Iberia and Iberojet from Madrid, Air France, KLM, Lufthansa, Edelweiss and, from 25 October 2026, British Airways from Heathrow, per FlightConnections and Wikipedia’s airline tables. At Liberia the only European carrier is Edelweiss, on a seasonal flight.
Taxis, shuttles and cars at SJO. Official airport taxis are orange with a yellow medallion and run on the meter; a taxi official stands just before the exit doors, per Two Weeks in Costa Rica (October 2025). Uber drivers cannot pick up at the curb; the app sends you to the bus stop on the main road past the parking garage. All rental agencies are off site, and a van takes you to the office. Immigration can take 20 minutes or an hour depending on the time of day.
Taxis, shuttles and cars at LIR. The airport names three authorized taxi companies, Amstar, RLX and Curubande, and lists the main rental agencies, among them Alamo, Budget, Hertz and Enterprise. Mytanfeet (September 2026) explains that agents meet you with signs after customs and drive you to offices 5 to 15 minutes away. From mid-December through March, and above all for arrivals between 11:00 and 13:00, it says to allow at least two hours from landing to driving; in low season, 30 to 40 minutes.
Can you fly into one and out of the other?
Yes, and for a trip that covers both sides of our map it is worth pricing. Costa Rica Vibes (September 2026) suggests flying into San José and out of Liberia, or the reverse, so you can drive a loop and skip the long return to the first airport. With our homes that could look like Escazú, then Monteverde, then Sámara, and a flight home from Liberia. Compare the two-airport fare with a round trip, and ask the rental company whether returning the car at the other airport costs extra before you book.
Where should you sleep the first night?
Near SJO, sleep in Escazú. It gets dark at about 18:00 all year, and Two Weeks in Costa Rica tells first-time visitors not to drive long distances after dark, so a flight that lands mid-afternoon or later should end 20 to 30 minutes away rather than on the road to the coast. Alta Pietra is our apartment there, with a pool, a hot tub and a view over the valley, from $150 a night with a two-night minimum. Escazú for a layover or first night near SJO plans both ends of the trip.
Near LIR, we have no home, and we would rather say so. Our Guanacaste house is Casa Almendros in Sámara, on the beach, for up to six, from $303 a night with a two-night minimum. The local manager meets you between 15:00 and 20:00. With 2 to 2.5 hours of driving on top of the rental pickup, that works for a morning or early afternoon landing; for a late one, book a hotel near the airport and drive down after breakfast.

Questions this guide answers
Is Liberia or San José airport better for Monteverde?
Both are about three hours from Monteverde by car, per Two Weeks in Costa Rica, so the road decides it. From San José (SJO) you drive Route 1 and then Route 606, which is paved all the way to Santa Elena. From Liberia (LIR) the usual road is Route 145 through Las Juntas, which mixes gravel and concrete, and Mytanfeet recommends a high-clearance car there, with 4WD in the rainy season.
