Two nights in Monteverde gives you one full day and two half days, which is enough if you use the half days. Arrive by noon and drop your bags at the house, walk a hanging bridges park in the afternoon, take a night tour after dinner. On day two, do the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve at its 7:30 opening and a coffee tour after lunch. On day three, eat breakfast and drive out. Two Weeks in Costa Rica calls two nights the minimum to see the major attractions; this is how to make the minimum feel unhurried.
Day 1 afternoon: arrive, drop bags, walk the bridges
Leave San José by 8:30 and you are in Monteverde by noon. The drive is about 3 hours, and the road is in How to get from San José to Monteverde. Standard check-in is 15:00, but at all four of our Monteverde stays you can leave your bags from about 11:00 while the clean finishes, so message us on WhatsApp with your arrival time and go straight out. There are no lockers in town; the house is the locker.
Spend the afternoon above the canopy. Selvatura Park is 6.7 km from Santa Elena, about 15 to 20 minutes, with eight bridges from 55 to 157 m long on a 3 km loop that takes 1 to 1.5 hours, open 7:00 to 16:00, $49 per adult per its own site. Treetopia Park, the former Sky Adventures, runs a six-bridge Sky Walk on hourly tours from 7:00 to 15:00 for $49 per adult. Arrive by 14:00 at either and you will be back at the house, now clean and yours, before dark.
Day 1 evening: the night tour
Book the night tour for the first evening, not the second, so weather or a late arrival can still be rescued the next night. The animals that make Monteverde famous are mostly nocturnal, and it gets dark at about 18:00 all year. Kinkajou Night Walk leaves at 18:00 and 20:20, lasts 1.5 hours and costs $35 per adult; the Monteverde Reserve’s own night walk starts between 18:00 and 18:30; a guided walk at the Monteverde Wildlife Refuge is about $44 plus a $15 entrance per Two Weeks in Costa Rica, whose guide turned up a two-toed sloth, a side-striped palm pit viper and a toucan asleep on a branch. We help you book whichever is closest to your house; tell us on WhatsApp. Eat early in Santa Elena or cook, and take the 18:00 slot so you are in bed by 21:00 for the morning.
Day 2 morning: the reserve at opening
Be at the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve visitor center for the 7:30 slot. Since 8 December 2025 the reserve sells timed tickets for one of three circuits, the 1.4 km Essence trail (about 1 hour), the 2.8 km Heart of the Forest (about 1.5 hours) or the 4.1 km Continental Divide (about 2.5 hours), with 26 people per slot. You park about 1.5 km below, a complimentary shuttle takes you to the trailhead, and the reserve asks you to arrive 15 minutes before your time. Tickets are $29 per adult and $16 per child per Two Weeks in Costa Rica (September 2026) and Mytanfeet, bought online in advance. The reserve is about 6 km and 15 minutes from Santa Elena, and Kapetsowa Container Loft is within walking distance of its trails, which is why couples on this plan tend to book it. Take the Continental Divide circuit if you walk well; it is the longest of the three.
If the reserve’s slots are gone, Curi-Cancha Reserve beside the cheese factory is the fallback: open 7:00 to 15:00, $25 per adult, 15 minutes from town, and the local pick for quetzals in season per Mytanfeet (January 2026).
Day 2 afternoon: coffee, chocolate and a slow sunset
After lunch in town, do the farm tour. Don Juan’s coffee, chocolate and sugar cane tour is 3 km from Santa Elena, about 2 hours, $52 per adult with a 13:00 and a 15:00 slot per Costa Rica Travel Life (January 2026); the operator lists it at 1 hour 40 minutes in Spanish and English. Take the 13:00 so you are done by 15:00 with the afternoon light left. Then go back to the house and stop. Aroma de Café has a jacuzzi and a deck over the coffee rows; Calma Loft faces the sunset. The second evening is for the terrace, a bottle from the supermarket and the sound the forest makes after rain.
Day 3: breakfast and the road out
Check-out is 11:00. Eat at the house, pack the night before, and leave by 9:00 if you are heading to the coast: Punta Leona is about 3 hours with a private driver per Monteverde Info, and the Route 606 descent is the same paved road you came up. If you are flying out of SJO the same day, give yourself the full 3 hours of driving plus the 3 hours airlines suggest before an international departure, which means an 11:00 check-out only works for evening flights.
What if you only have one night?
Then the early check-in is the whole plan. Arrive by 11:00, drop bags, do the bridges, the 18:00 night walk and the 7:30 reserve slot, and leave by 10:30. You lose the coffee tour and the slow evening, but you see the canopy by day, the forest by night and the reserve at its best. Mytanfeet notes that most people stay one or two days here because the area is small; one night done this way beats two nights spent waiting for a 15:00 key. The routine is in Monteverde luggage storage and early check-in.
What should you pack for the cloud forest?
A fleece, a rain shell and shoes you do not mind getting muddy. Nights average around 15 °C, and Costa Rica Vibes puts typical lows at 14 to 16 °C with strong wind from December to February; September and October are the wettest months. Bring a small flashlight for the night walk (guides carry the good ones), a refillable bottle and cash in colones for tips and small vendors, since not every business takes cards. Leave the umbrella; the shell works better on the bridges.
Where to stay
The three homes below are ours. For this plan, Kapetsowa Container Loft puts you within walking distance of the reserve trails for the 7:30 slot, with a heater for the nights and two queen beds. Calma Loft is the smaller container loft for two, 15 minutes out with the sunset. Aroma de Café is the cabin with the jacuzzi and the coffee deck for the second evening. All three take bags from 11:00 and let you in early when the clean is done, and we help book the night tour. That is the difference between two nights and two half days.
Questions this guide answers
How much do two nights of activities in Monteverde cost per person?
About $165 per adult for the plan on this page, using the prices published in 2026: $49 for the Selvatura hanging bridges, $35 for the Kinkajou night walk, $29 for one circuit of the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve and $52 for the Don Juan coffee, chocolate and sugar cane tour. Swap Curi-Cancha ($25) for the reserve or skip the coffee tour to bring it under $120. Meals, fuel and the house are extra.
Do we need to book the Monteverde Reserve in advance?
Yes. Since 8 December 2025 the reserve sells timed tickets for a specific circuit with 26 people per slot and no day passes, and the reserve's own site strongly encourages booking online in advance; slots run from 7:30 to 14:45. In high season the early slots go first, so book the 7:30 slot the same day you book the house.
Can we follow this plan without a car?
Yes, if you sleep in town. Casa Yaiwa is a two-minute walk from the center of Santa Elena, where shuttles and the public bus arrive. Kinkajou Night Walk and most tour operators pick up in town, Café de Monteverde adds a round-trip hotel shuttle for $7, and Don Juan offers transport at an additional cost. For the reserve, take a taxi from town to the visitor center, about 15 minutes.
Which order should we do the reserves and bridges in?
Bridges on the afternoon you arrive, the reserve at opening the next morning. Hanging bridges parks are open into the afternoon (Selvatura until 16:00, Treetopia tours until 15:00) and forgive a late start. The Monteverde Reserve is quietest and most active at 7:30, and its tickets are timed, so it belongs at the start of a day. Night tours run after 18:00 either evening.
