About Calma Loft

Calma Loft is a private one-room container loft on a hillside 15 minutes by car from Santa Elena, with floor-to-ceiling windows that face the sunset over the forest. It sleeps two on a queen bed, three with an air mattress, and suits couples and solo travelers who have a car and want quiet nights more than a walk to restaurants.

The loft is one bright room with wood and rattan finishes. The queen bed has a memory-foam mattress and faces the glass door to a small balcony; a full-height mirror, a coat stand and a bench take the luggage. The kitchenette runs under a corner window: two-burner stove, mini fridge, microwave, toaster, blender and a drip coffee maker, with local coffee and tea on the house. A high wooden table with three stools doubles as dining table and desk, with the same view. The bathroom is private, with hot water in the shower. Outside there is a patio, a garden that is not fully fenced, and three parking spaces on the driveway.

Guests write about the view at sunrise and sunset more than anything else, then about how clean the loft is, the comfortable bed and the value. One guest said washing dishes had never been so pleasant. Most say the place looks exactly like the photos, and that our team and the manager were easy to reach and quick to help. A small fan heater is in the loft for cold, rainy evenings, and it gets used.

The first thing to know is the driveway: the last stretch to the loft is short, steep and gravel. A standard car manages in dry weather and several guests did it in a two-wheel drive, but a 4x4 or an SUV makes it easier, and you should arrive in daylight the first time. There is no air conditioning; two fans are provided and the loft can get warm on a sunny afternoon, although nights are cool. Hot water is in the shower only, and it runs warmer at lower pressure. The windows let in the light early, so bring a sleep mask if you sleep late. You may hear animals on the roof at night and, some nights, the neighbor's dogs. The loft sits in the forest, so you may see insects; the property runs periodic pest control. It is not suitable for infants under two, and there are no restaurants within walking distance, so bring groceries from Santa Elena.

Check-in is self-service with a keypad from 15:00, and someone from our team or the manager can meet you in person if you prefer. If the loft is clean before that, early check-in from 11:00 is possible on request; if not, you can leave your bags while the clean finishes. Ask on WhatsApp the day before, and ask about night tours. Guests who drove it put the Kinkajou night walk about 15 minutes away and the Monteverde Reserve about 30.

Getting there

Monteverde is about three hours by car from San José (SJO) or Liberia (LIR). From Santa Elena the loft is another 15 minutes by car (guests say 15 to 20), on a road that turns to gravel and ends in a short, steep driveway. Two-wheel drive cars have made it in dry weather; a 4x4 or SUV is more comfortable, and in the rainy season it is the safer choice. Arrive before dark the first time and follow the directions we send rather than the map pin, because Airbnb geocodes the address oddly. You will want a car here: there is nothing within walking distance, and a taxi from town works for people who arrive by shuttle. The exact address and the keypad code come after booking.

  • “This place was wonderful to stay in if you are looking for a more private area away from the busy tourist area! It is a 15 min drive to downtown Monteverde. I would highly recommend renting a car to get around or grabbing a taxi.”

  • “Fantastic place surrounded by greenery. We felt very comfortable and found peace and relaxation. The view from the loft is beautiful (especially in the evening and in the morning). You definitely need a car, as there are no restaurants or the like within walking distance. We cooked in the kitchen with a fantastic view on both evenings. We would definitely visit again!”

Frequently asked about Calma Loft

Do we need a 4x4 to reach Calma Loft?

Not strictly, but it helps. The access road is unpaved and the driveway is short and steep; guests have made it in two-wheel drive cars in dry weather, and others say the 4x4 mode made it easier. In the rainy season or after dark, take the higher car and arrive in daylight the first time.

How far is the loft from Santa Elena?

About 15 minutes by car; guests report 15 to 20. There are no restaurants within walking distance, so buy groceries in town on the way. A guest timed the Kinkajou night walk at about 15 minutes and the Monteverde Reserve at about 30.

Does the loft have air conditioning or heating?

Neither. Two fans are provided for warm afternoons, when the loft can get hot in the sun, and a small fan heater for cold, rainy evenings. Nights are cool at this altitude. A sleep mask helps too, because the windows let in the early light.

Is there hot water?

Yes, in the shower. The kitchen tap runs cold. The shower runs warmer at lower pressure, so turn it down if it feels lukewarm. The bathroom is private and inside the loft.

Is there a kitchen?

A kitchenette. Two-burner stove, mini fridge, microwave, toaster, blender and a drip coffee maker, with local coffee and tea provided, plus dishes and cooking basics. Guests have cooked dinner both nights and eaten at the high table facing the sunset.

Can we check in early or drop our bags?

Yes, on request. If the loft is clean before 15:00 we let you in from 11:00; if the clean is in progress you can leave your bags and go. Ask on WhatsApp the day before. There are no luggage lockers in Monteverde, so this matters.

Is it quiet?

Mostly. The loft is private with no restaurants or traffic nearby, and guests come for that. You may hear animals walking on the roof at night, and the neighbor's dogs bark some evenings. In strong wind the container makes noise.

Can three people stay?

Yes. There is one queen bed with a memory-foam mattress, and an air mattress is set up for a third guest on request. It is not suitable for infants under two.
