There are no luggage lockers in Monteverde. At all four Tres Mares stays in Monteverde you can drop your bags from about 11:00 on arrival day while the previous clean finishes, and check in early as soon as the house is ready, often hours before the standard 15:00. For a one- or two-night visit that is the difference between a full afternoon in the forest and an afternoon spent waiting with suitcases. This page explains how it works and how to ask.
Why is there no luggage storage in Monteverde?
Because Monteverde is a village of scattered lodges on a ridge, with no station and no left-luggage office. Santa Elena has banks, supermarkets and tour desks, and the reserves and bridge parks are set up for day visitors with a car, not for people carrying a week of clothes. Most guests arrive between late morning and early afternoon, after a roughly three-hour drive from either airport, and hotel check-in across town is 15:00. That gap is the problem. Airbnb has no checkbox for “we take your bags early”, so hosts who do it have to say so in writing. We have done it for years without writing it down, and this page is where we say it.
How does the luggage drop work at a Tres Mares stay?
Message us on WhatsApp the day before or the morning you arrive with your expected time. We check when the previous guests leave and when the local manager cleans, and reply with a window: usually “bags from 11:00, house ready around 13:00” or, when nobody is leaving that day, “the house is free, come whenever you like”. When you arrive, the manager or the cleaner lets you put your luggage inside, out of the rain, and you drive or walk off to the first activity. When the clean is done we message you and you can move in; where the house is on self check-in, the instructions apply from that moment.
“When the clean is done” means exactly that. A loft like Calma Loft or Kapetsowa turns around faster than a three-bedroom house like Casa Yaiwa, so the early time varies by house and by day. Two people with a small car and a flexible plan will barely notice. Six people in a house should plan on the bag drop and treat the early key as a bonus.
Can you guarantee early check-in?
No. We can guarantee the luggage drop from about 11:00 at all four stays, and we can tell you the morning of arrival what the odds of an early key look like. Early check-in depends on two things we do not control: the departure before you (guests leaving at 11:00 rather than 9:00) and the size of the clean. On days with no departure it is close to certain; on a Saturday in high season with a same-day turnover it may be 14:00 rather than 12:00. What we will not do is tell you “yes” and then leave you outside. If it is not going to happen, you will know by mid-morning and can plan lunch and the afternoon around it.
What can you do with the afternoon you gain?
Plenty, because Monteverde’s parks run until late afternoon. Selvatura Park’s hanging bridges are open 7:00 to 16:00 every day, about 15 to 20 minutes from Santa Elena, with a 1 to 1.5 hour loop over eight bridges for $49 per adult. Treetopia Park runs its six-bridge Sky Walk on hourly tours from 7:00 to 15:00 for $49 per adult per Two Weeks in Costa Rica (May 2026). Curi-Cancha Reserve, 15 minutes from town, is open until 15:00 with a $25 entrance. Don Juan’s coffee, chocolate and sugar cane tour has 13:00 and 15:00 slots, about 2 hours for $52. The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve sells timed circuit slots until 14:45, so a 14:00 slot on the 1.4 km Essence trail fits an arrival-day afternoon.
Then the night tour, which is where the early arrival matters most, because the animals come out after dark. Kinkajou Night Walk leaves at 18:00 and 20:20 and lasts 1.5 hours for $35 per adult; the reserve’s own night walk starts between 18:00 and 18:30. Two Weeks in Costa Rica’s guide came back from one walk with a two-toed sloth, a side-striped palm pit viper and a toucan asleep on a branch. We help you book whichever fits where you sleep; tell us on WhatsApp when you confirm your arrival time and we send options. Monteverde in two nights puts all of this in order.
Which stays offer it?
All four of our Monteverde stays: Kapetsowa Container Loft, Casa Yaiwa, Calma Loft and Aroma de Café. Each listing carries early check-in on request, luggage drop and night-tour help as standing perks. Kapetsowa and Calma Loft are on self check-in, so moving in early does not depend on someone driving over with a key. Casa Yaiwa and Aroma de Café are handed over in person, so the WhatsApp message matters more there. Casa Yaiwa is the easiest for people arriving by bus or shuttle, since it is a two-minute walk from the center of Santa Elena. The other three are a drive from town, 15 to 20 minutes in the case of Calma Loft and Aroma de Café, which is worth knowing if you plan to drop bags and go straight to a park.
Does this exist in Cahuita and Punta Leona too?
Partly. Our two container villas near Cahuita take a luggage drop on arrival day, and a maintenance person is usually on the property, but early check-in is not a standing perk there; ask, and we will tell you what that day allows. In Punta Leona, Sámara, Escazú and Kirkland the houses are on self check-in at 15:00 and we send local tips before you arrive. If you are landing early, ask, and we will tell you what is possible that day rather than promise a rule. Monteverde is where the short stays and the time-poor arrivals concentrate, so Monteverde is where the routine is built in.
Where to stay
Every home on this page is ours. For a one-night stop, Kapetsowa (walking distance to the reserve trails, sleeps four) or Calma Loft (for two, with a heater) turn around fastest. For two nights with a car, Aroma de Café’s jacuzzi over the coffee rows makes the second evening worth it. For families or anyone without a car, Casa Yaiwa in town. Whichever you choose, message us on WhatsApp with your arrival time; the reply is the only booking the luggage drop needs. The full area guide is at Monteverde, and the road up is in How to get from San José to Monteverde.
Questions this guide answers
What are the standard check-in and check-out times?
Check-in is at 15:00 and check-out at 11:00 at all four of our Monteverde stays, the same as on the Airbnb listings. The early check-in and the luggage drop come on top of that. From about 11:00 on the day you arrive you can leave bags while the clean is in progress, and once the house is ready you can move in, which is often well before 15:00.
Do we need to arrange the luggage drop in advance?
Message us on WhatsApp the day before or the morning of your arrival with your expected time. We check the departure before you and the cleaning schedule with the local manager and reply with a realistic window. Turning up unannounced at 11:00 usually works too, but a message means the manager knows to expect you and can tell you if the house is already free.
Can we leave bags after check-out as well?
Ask the day before and we will tell you straight. Check-out is 11:00, and whether bags can stay in the house afterward depends on the next arrival and when the cleaner needs the space. When there is no same-day arrival it is usually simple; when there is, we will suggest the timing that works for both of you. There is no locker alternative in town.
Is early check-in guaranteed if we book one night?
No, and we would rather say so than promise it. It depends on the guests before you leaving on time and on the clean, which takes longer in a three-bedroom house than in a loft. What we do guarantee at all four stays is the luggage drop from about 11:00, so your afternoon is free either way. One-night guests get in early more often than not.
