A nonstop flight from Canada to Costa Rica takes about 5 to 5.5 hours from Toronto, about 6 from Ottawa, Montreal or Quebec City, 6 hours 20 minutes from Winnipeg, about 7 from Calgary and 7 hours 15 minutes from Vancouver, landing at San José (SJO) in the center of the country or Liberia (LIR) in Guanacaste. Toronto, Montreal and Calgary have nonstops flying now, at the start of October, while Ottawa, Quebec City, Winnipeg and Vancouver only get theirs between late October and mid-December, and several routes are winter-only, ending in April.
This page is only about the flight. For entry rules, money, driving and insurance, read Costa Rica from Canada: what to expect.
How long is the nonstop from each Canadian city?
These are FlightsFrom’s scheduled nonstop times toward Costa Rica, checked on 30 September 2026. The range runs from the shortest to the longest scheduled flight on the route. A date means that airline’s nonstops start then; all dates are 2026 unless marked. End dates and most frequencies come from The Tico Times, as the next section explains.
| From | To San José (SJO) | To Liberia (LIR) |

Liberia’s own airport lists six Canadian destinations, which match the table: Montreal, Toronto, Calgary, Ottawa, Vancouver and Winnipeg. The Tico Times (August 2026) says Air Transat’s Quebec City route brings the count of Canadian cities with a nonstop to Costa Rica to seven, which are the seven above.
Which routes only fly part of the year?
Three are explicitly seasonal, per The Tico Times. Porter’s Toronto to San José flight runs from 2 December 2026 to 30 April 2027, four times a week (May 2026). Air Canada’s Vancouver to Liberia flight runs on Mondays and Thursdays from 13 December 2026 to 12 April 2027 and lands at 7:35 a.m. (April and August 2026); 13 December is a Sunday, so the first departure is that night, landing Monday morning. WestJet’s new Ottawa to Liberia flight runs on Sundays from 20 December 2026 to 4 April 2027 (July 2026), a timing the paper notes gives you a clean seven-night stay. Quebec City is the exception among the new routes: The Tico Times (August 2026) calls Air Transat’s weekly flight permanent rather than seasonal. Beyond those three, look at the start dates in the table: most routes restart between October and December, so a trip in early October has far fewer choices than one in January.
What if your city has no nonstop?
Edmonton and Halifax have none listed. FlightsFrom shows Edmonton’s last Liberia flight, on Sunwing, scheduled in April 2024, and Vancouver’s last San José flight, on Air Transat, in April 2021. From those cities you connect, either inside Canada through one of the cities in the table or through a US hub such as Miami, Houston, Dallas, Atlanta or Newark, whose Costa Rica nonstops show no start date on FlightsFrom; our guide to the flight from the US has their times.
Two things change when you connect through the US. First, the documents: Canada’s travel advice says every Canadian citizen, children included, needs a passport or a NEXUS card to fly to the United States, “or even just transiting”. Permanent residents of Canada may need a US visa, and dual Canadian and US citizens must use their US passport. Second, where you queue: US Customs and Border Protection runs preclearance at Calgary, Edmonton, Halifax, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto Pearson, Billy Bishop, Vancouver, Victoria and Winnipeg, so you clear US inspection before you board and walk off in the US straight to your connection.
San José or Liberia?
Fly into San José for our homes in Escazú, Punta Leona, Monteverde and Cahuita, and into Liberia for Sámara, about 110 km and 2 to 2.5 hours from LIR per Costa Rica Vibes. From Western Canada, Winnipeg and Ottawa the table makes the choice for you, since every nonstop goes to Liberia. Monteverde works from both: Two Weeks in Costa Rica puts it about three hours from each airport. For fares, the drive at the other end and flying into one and out of the other, read our guide to choosing between San José and Liberia.
What time will it be when you land?
Costa Rica is on UTC-6 all year and never changes its clocks, per timeanddate.com. The gap depends on your province, because British Columbia, Alberta and Manitoba have decided to stop changing theirs:
- Ontario and Quebec (Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec City): Costa Rica is 2 hours behind until clocks fall back on 1 November 2026, then 1 hour behind until they spring forward on 14 March 2027.
- Nova Scotia (Halifax): 3 hours behind until 1 November, then 2 hours behind until March.
- Manitoba (Winnipeg): the province will not set its clocks back on 1 November and stays at UTC-5 year-round, so Costa Rica is 1 hour behind all year.
- Alberta (Calgary, Edmonton): now on UTC-6 year-round, so you keep the same time as Costa Rica.
- British Columbia (Vancouver): now on UTC-7 year-round, so Costa Rica is 1 hour ahead all year.
Schedules show local time at each end. The Air Canada flight FlightsFrom listed from Toronto to San José on 30 September leaves at 18:35 Toronto time, which puts you on the ground after 21:30 in Costa Rica until 1 November, and after 22:30 once Toronto falls back.
Landing late: where to sleep and when to drive
It gets dark around 6 p.m. all year, and Two Weeks in Costa Rica tells first-time visitors not to drive long distances after dark: faded lines, little lighting, more rain at night and people on the shoulder. Work back from sunset:
- Punta Leona is about 90 km and around 1.5 hours from SJO, per Hotel Punta Leona’s FAQ; without traffic we make it closer to an hour.
- Monteverde is about 3 hours. If you land after 14:00, sleep near the airport and drive up in the morning; How to get from San José to Monteverde covers the road.
- Cahuita is 4 to 5 hours by Route 32, per Costa Rica Vibes, so it only works the same day on a morning arrival.
- Sámara is 2 to 2.5 hours from Liberia, which suits a morning landing like Air Canada’s from Vancouver.
- Escazú is 17 to 19 km and 20 to 30 minutes from SJO outside the weekday rush hours, per Nest Stays.
That last one is where an evening flight from Toronto should end. Our apartment there, Alta Pietra, has a king bed, gated parking and building security who hand over the keys, and it works as a first night or a last one before an early departure. If you land at night, tell us your arrival time in advance and we will explain the parking arrangement. Our Escazú guide covers the ride from the terminal. Send us your flight number on WhatsApp and we will tell you whether to drive on the same day or sleep first.
